U23 Vietnam sets quarterfinal target at Asiad 2026: Wide open opportunity for young players

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has officially set a quarterfinal target for the U23 national team at the 2026 Asian Games. This goal is well within the team's capacity given the current squad of 23 highly experienced players. Among the 23 players, 16 featured in the July training camp, providing stability and understanding on the pitch. Seven new faces like Lý Đức, Quang Kiệt, Phạm Minh Phúc, Lê Phát, and Ngọc Mỹ are also familiar with the coaching staff's philosophy. Most players have one or two seasons in the V-League, along with youth tournament experience, including the recent U23 Asian Championship. U23 Vietnam is placed in a group with Uzbekistan, Kuwait, and the Philippines. While Uzbekistan is formidable, opportunities to claim one of the top two spots are open. If they perform well against Kuwait and the Philippines, coach Đinh Hồng Vinh's side can advance to the quarterfinals, or even replicate the previous generation's semifinal or medal achievements. This squad already won bronze at the U23 Asian Championship earlier this year. However, the quarterfinal is not the ultimate goal. The Asian Games serve as a test for national team head coach Kim Sang Sik, who is evaluating players for the post-2027 Asian Cup era. The decision to send a near-strongest squad – instead of an U21 team – underscores the significance beyond the tournament. Players must impress Kim and their club coaches to secure future call-ups. The Asian Games are just one of many assessments; consistent performances in the V-League or First Division are equally important. The tournament is a key opportunity for U23 players to prove themselves, but only by earning regular starting spots in domestic leagues can they truly open the door to the senior national team. With thorough preparation and a talented squad, U23 Vietnam can aim for a successful Asiad.
