Sommers twins commit to Grand Canyon: A stepping stone for Big West swimming future

Amidst the early summer recruiting wave, the story of twin brothers John and Ethan Sommers from Hillsboro, Oregon, has caught the attention of US college swimming experts. Both are current Westview High School students and members of Hillsboro HEAT club. They recently made verbal commitments to Grand Canyon University (GCU), a private university in Phoenix, Arizona, competing in the Big West Conference under NCAA Division I. His best times are 2:22.69 in 200 breast and 1:05.21 in 100 breast, potentially ranking fifth at the 2026 Big West Championships – but still 28 seconds behind champion Carter Dooling. Both athletes are currently high school juniors/seniors, a stage where age-group performance peaks before college improvement. Grand Canyon’s men’s team finished second at the 2026 Big West, indicating a rising program under coach James Resare. The twins’ verbal commitments are non-binding until signing National Letters of Intent in November of their senior year.
